Rangers to make ‘surprise’ Derek McInnes call after 49ers takeover

Rangers could potentially make a surprising call regarding Derek McInnes if the 49ers Enterprises complete their takeover.

Philippe Clement has been sacked at Ibrox, leaving the Gers scrambling for his replacement.

The Light Blues have been in the news as of late, with the American consortium headed by Paraag Marathe, in advanced talks over a possible takeover.

With the 49ers Enterprises eyeing an Ibrox investment, they will seemingly have a big say in who the next permanent manager could be in Govan.

49ers Enterprises will not fancy McInnes

It would be surprising to see the 49ers pursue McInnes as the Glaswegian outfit’s next manager, Chris Jack says.

The Rangers Review journalist doesn’t expect the potential new owners to hire the Kilmarnock head coach to replace Clement permanently in the summer.

Jack feels the American consortium will instead look to get a well-known manager to take charge of their project at the Bears, with an interim appointment likely first.

Speaking on The Rangers Review (23 February), the journalist said: “I would be surprised if the American ownership would see someone of McInnes’ profile as the figurehead for their project.

“I think they will go for someone with a bigger name with a bigger wage package as well.”

McInnes an experienced Scottish Premiership manager

McInnes wouldn’t be a bad option at Rangers, considering his vast experience in the Scottish Premiership over the years.

The former Scotland international thrived during his time at Aberdeen, winning the Scottish League Cup whilst trying to push Celtic.

Now at Kilmarnock, McInnes has managed to do relatively well after winning promotion to the top flight with them.

Patrick Stewart waited too long to sack Clement, but the Ibrox board can now take their time as they look for his replacement.

This season can be considered a write-off, as the Light Blues have no realistic chance of winning anything domestically.

The Europa League can be the only salvation for the Gers in the current campaign, but it would be too much to expect them to win the competition.

While the Gers have enough pull in Scotland to get McInnes to join them immediately, whether an approach will be made remains to be seen.

Considering the uncertainty around the Bears’ ownership, the Ibrox faithful may have to wait for a while before a new manager is appointed.

McInnes might not be at the top of the fans’ wishlist, but the Scotsman could evidently be a realistic option as the Light Blues look to compete with Celtic again.
