Rangers to ‘appoint new manager’ within 24 hours at Ibrox

Rangers could be set to appoint a new interim manager within a “whirlwind” 24 hours after Philippe Clement was sacked.

Clement’s reign at Rangers finally came to an end on Sunday (23 February) when his departure was announced.

After losing 2-0 to St Mirren on Saturday (22 February), there was no way back for the Belgian, even with little to play for this term.

Rangers ready Barry Ferguson appointment

With Clement now out the door, the Gers are seeking a new managerial appointment to try and stabilise the ship at Ibrox.

Despite the Gers hierarchy previously backing the boss, it seems like the demands of supporters made their way into the boardroom at Ibrox with a realisation that the current form is not good enough.

According to the Daily Record (24 February), that opportunity is set to be offered to Barry Ferguson.

Any deal would be short term with the Gers looking to appoint a temporary successor before making a firm choice for another appointment at the end of the season.

It’s claimed that a deal could be completed within 24 hours with talks between Ferguson and his former club already ongoing.

Ferguson most recently managed Alloa Athletic although resigned from his post in 2022 after struggling in the campaign.

The 47-year-old has also had permanent spells with Kelty Hearts and Clyde although his first experience of management was as caretaker with Blackpool back in 2014 where he helped the Tangerines avoid relegation.

Rangers have to take their time with their new appointment

Clement’s exit from Ibrox was inevitable given how poorly things have gone in Glasgow this term.

While there have been some good results in there, the Belgian has struggled to find consistency with his side and, consequently, performances and results have often been well below the expected levels.

With the Light Blues sitting a massive 13 points away from Celtic in the league, it highlights just how much the Gers have fallen from grace in recent times, with change certainly needed.

When it comes to a replacement, the Glasgow outfit needs to be very careful they set a new precedent going forward rather than another flop appointment.

However, with rumours of a takeover by the 49ers Enterprises on the cards, the new owners could well want to bring in their own faces whenever a deal is completed.

With that in mind, appointing Ferguson until the end of the campaign could prove to be the boost that is needed at Ibrox.

Under Clement, standards dropped massively and the expectations of the club were not clear.

Therefore, bringing in someone who knows exactly where the Ibrox club should be competing and could give that morale boost could surely lift things in the interim period.
