Rangers set to make new manager hire already after Clement sack reveal

Rangers look set to appoint an interim replacement for Philippe Clement imminently ahead of a visit to Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

Clement was relieved of his duties at Ibrox on Sunday (23 February) after the Gers were subject to a 2-0 defeat against St Mirren the day prior.

The defeat left the Light Blues sitting 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the table and ultimately, proved to be the end of the road for the boss.

Rangers set to make caretaker appointment

Although it felt like Clement’s sacking at Rangers might have been a long time coming, the Glasgow outfit doesn’t appear to have an immediate succession plan to replace the Belgian.

However, according to the Rangers Review (24 February), the appointment of a caretaker manager is expected on Monday.

This is because the Light Blues face a trip to Kilmarnock on Wednesday (26 February) meaning whoever is appointed will need some time to work with the players.

It’s claimed that either Kevin Thomson or Issame Chara could step into the caretaker manager role ahead of the trip to Rugby Park.

It will then be up to the Rangers hierarchy to choose whether they are ready for a new permanent appointment or if they will be looking at an interim boss for the remainder of the campaign.

Rangers could be in a transitional period

It’s a bit uncertain what will come next for Rangers as they find themselves at a bit of a crossroads at this stage in the campaign.

With only the Europa League left to play for this term, it certainly seems as though it would be worth taking time over a managerial appointment to get it right and improve prospects for next season.

Furthermore, with the 49ers Enterprises in talks over a takeover at Ibrox, that could also change everything as it would adjust where the club find itself financially.

It has been rumoured that Barry Ferguson is in talks with Rangers over taking the managerial vacancy on an interim basis until the end of the season which could be the route to go down if the future is uncertain.

In the remainder of the campaign, there has to be some focus put on steadying the ship and increasing the mindset and the character of many of the players in Light Blue this term.

However, if the Gers are going to try and be more ambitious at this stage then a bigger appointment than Ferguson would be expected to kick up the table.
