Rangers ready to appoint Steven Gerrard in new role after Clement sack

Rangers are in the hunt for a new manager at Ibrox after they opted to sack Philippe Clement off the back of another home defeat.

After Rangers’ 2-0 loss at home to St. Mirren, any minimal hope that was left in Clement was quickly diminished.

With the Belgian having been under serious pressure at Ibrox for several months, Rangers had no real option other than to sack Clement after the failures he had been at the forefront of.

Any real chances of success had been curtailed after the shock Scottish Cup defeat to Queen’s Park, with the Europa League their only remaining hope.

However, the Light Blues may be about to appoint an ex-favourite at Ibrox in a bid to get everyone back on the same page.

Steven Gerrard return on cards for Rangers

Ever since Steven Gerrard’s departure, success has been nothing but fantasy, with Rangers failing to keep up with the pace of the current Celtic side.

However, a return could be on the cards in what Sam Matterface has deemed as good news for those of a Light Blue persuasion.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (23 February, 6.22pm), Matterface said: “In terms of successors, I think Steven Gerrard is sort of slated to go back there in some sort of temporary capacity and then see what happens.

“That would be a popular appointment, I think.”

Given the success that Rangers had previously under Gerrard, his appointment would likely bring back some of the optimism that was lost under the stewardship of Clement.

Rangers have a no-brainer decision to make on Gerrard

The next appointment at Ibrox has to be someone capable of getting everyone back on side while also getting Rangers up to a standard where they are able to compete with Celtic.

At face value, there appear very few better acquitted for that role than Gerrard who was the main man responsible for most of the success achieved by the Gers for many years.

Gerrard was a match made in heaven for the Light Blues and his ability to get the best out of his players is exactly what has been missing at Rangers.
