Rangers news: Huge Kevin Thomson update emerges as Barry Ferguson joins
Rangers have hired Barry Ferguson until the end of the season and David Edgar has shared an update on his backroom team.
The Heart and Hand podcast host was asked about Kevin Thomson being Ferguson’s assistant, who has been named the interim manager.
Ferguson played nearly 300 games for the Ibrox outfit and is now tasked with the job of salvaging the season after the club parted ways with Philippe Clement.
Ibrox overhaul appears to be underway amid Kevin Thomson links
Thomson was understood to be on the verge of his return to Ibrox a few weeks ago to take up a role in the academy.
Now, with Ferguson returning to the club, he has been linked with being his assistant manager.
However, Edgar has poured cold water on rumours linking Thomson with a role on Ferguson’s first-team staff.
He wrote on X: “No that’s it for now.”
Rangers can do with someone like Kevin Thomson on their staff
Having Thomson as part of Ferguson’s staff at Ibrox could significantly enhance Ferguson’s managerial tenure due to their shared history, complementary skills and deep understanding of the club’s culture.
Both of them are club legends, having played together during successful spells in the late 2000s, including the 2008 UEFA Cup final run.
This shared experience fosters a strong bond and mutual trust, essential for a cohesive coaching team.
Thomson, a tactically astute midfielder in his playing days, has since proven his coaching credentials by leading Kelty Hearts to the Scottish League Two title in 2022, showcasing his ability to implement effective strategies and develop players.
Scottish Premiership | 2nd (13 points behind Celtic) |
Scottish League Cup | Lost the final on penalties to Celtic |
Scottish Cup | Knocked out in the fifth round, beaten by Queen’s Park |
Europa League | Round of 16 (ongoing) |
His analytical approach could balance Ferguson’s renowned leadership and motivational qualities, providing a blend of inspiration and structure to the squad.
Additionally, Thomson’s recent academy experience at Rangers equips him with insights into the current youth pipeline, aiding Ferguson in integrating young talent into the first team, something which is crucial given the club’s ongoing rebuild.
Their intimate knowledge of the expectations and fanbase would also help them rally the players and supporters during challenging times, potentially stabilising Gers’ performance in a turbulent season.
Together, they could embody the club’s identity while driving progress in the short term.
