Rangers ‘given April date’ as Steven Gerrard to Ibrox update shared
Rangers are back in the market for a new permanent manager, and could yet turn to 2021 Premiership title winner Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard remains revered in Govan after delivering the Ibrox club’s first title of the post-liquidation era, embarking on an unbeaten season which saw the Gers finish with 102 points, conceding just 13 goals.
Philippe Clement and his staff were finally shown the door by Rangers on Sunday after a 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren; a decision which was long overdue in the eyes of many Light Blues supporters.
With Barry Ferguson leading an interim team of ex-Rangers players for the rest of the season, the hunt is on for a permanent appointment to succeed Clement in the summer, with several big names mooted.

Steven Gerrard roadblock revealed amid Rangers links
As the last manager to achieve defining success with Premiership title number 55 at Ibrox, it’s no surprise to see Gerrard’s name with alongside the likes of David Wagner to become Rangers‘ new boss.
Club | Tenure | Matches | Win percentage | Honours |
Rangers | 2018 – 2021 | 193 | 63.8 per cent | 2020/21 Premiership |
Aston Villa | 2021 – 2022 | 40 | 32.5 per cent | – |
Al-Ettifaq | 2023 – 2025 | 59 | 39.0 per cent | – |
However, talkSPORT reported on 24 February that with Ferguson, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Alan McGregor in post for the rest of the season, a move for Gerrard in the summer is far more probable.
That’s largely due to the fact that Gerrard would be “unlikely” consider any new job before April, owing to potential tax issues in Saudi Arabia after his departure from Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January.

Steven Gerrard the perfect candidate for revolutionised Rangers
Though Gerrard would likely be available to return to Ibrox from April onwards, rushing into an appointment with potentially nothing to play for at that point of the season would be a futile gesture.
Furthermore, waiting until the summer and using that time to make the right appointment makes much more sense, particularly given Rangers could be under brand-new ownership by the end of May.
American investors 49ers Enterprises are in ‘advanced’ negotiations to complete a majority takeover in Govan following talks with Paraag Marathe, who leads the group and is the chairman of Leeds United.
Leeds are arguably the blueprint Rangers fans can follow when it comes to predicting what the 49ers’ actions will be when they take charge at Ibrox; with both clubs being giants who are down on their luck.
Daniel Farke was hired due to his experience in winning promotion from the Championship, and if the 49ers want a manager with Premiership-winning experience, there’s no better example than Gerrard.
