Neil McCann turns down cushty job to take on new Rangers role as details revealed
Neil McCann has turned down a respectable role to make his return to Rangers after Philippe Clement was sacked.
The Belgian had a torrid time in charge of the Gers with the Ibrox outfit losing to St Mirren twice as well as finding themselves knocked out of the Scottish Cup in a 1-0 home defeat against Queen’s Park.
While Patrick Stewart may have seemed all for keeping Clement on due to Rangers’ ongoing Europa League run, their recent defeat to the Saints was the final straw that broke the camel’s back.
This has resulted in Ibrox legends Barry Ferguson, Billy Dodds and McCann all coming in to try and salvage what’s left of the Gers’ season.
And after McCann was announced as part of the coaching staff, it’s been reported that he turned down a rather reputable role to take Stewart up on his offer.

McCann turns down commentary gig with Sky Sports
Since the Ibrox legend retired in 2009, he’s had a fair few roles within football. While most of it has been spent doing punditry work, he has managed the likes of Dundee and Inverness over the years.
However, due to the current state Rangers are in after sacking Clement, it’s not a surprise to see him wanting to come back and lead the Gers to as much glory as possible.
Team | Position | Points |
Celtic | 1st | 69 |
Rangers | 2nd | 56 |
Aberdeen | 3rd | 41 |
Dundee United | 4th | 40 |
While the rest of the 2024/25 campaign will likely consist of the new coaching staff trying to patch up Rangers’ reputation, there’s still a chance that they could do well in Europe.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News (23 February, 14:03pm), Sky Sports reporter Luke Shanley gave some information about where the future of McCann was headed.
“Neill McCann as well. He should have been commentating for Sky on Wednesday for the game at Kilmarnock.”
Patrick Stewart needs Clement sacking to pay off
Although Rangers haven’t had the best of times this term, it feels like Stewart has been handed the short end of the stick.
The former Manchester United CEO came in during the Gers’ time of need and while he may have done the best he can with what he was given, more players than Rafael Fernandes should have been signed during the winter transfer window.
Alongside this, the fact that Clement was under severe scrutiny since the start of the season hasn’t helped matters much and has certainly made his job much harder than it needed to be.
While he has now made the decision to relieve the Belgian of his duties, there’s still that nagging feeling that his choice to hire former Ibrox players might not pay off.
Which, in reality, is a thought that Rangers can’t really afford, especially when you look at the 13-point gap that currently separates them from first-placed Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
