David Wagner in running to replace Philippe Clement as Rangers meeting revealed
David Wagner has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace Philippe Clement as the Rangers manager, but another candidate has already been ruled out.
Rumours about who could be the next manager to take the reins at Ibrox are rife after Rangers sacked Clement on Sunday (23 February) in the aftermath of a demoralising 2-0 defeat against St. Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.
Issame Charai has been assigned to oversee the first team’s training session on Monday (24 February) and could be in the dugout when the Light Blues lock horns with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday, 26 February.
However, the plan is for the Ibrox hierarchy to hire a caretaker manager until the end of the season as things stand, with Fraser Thornton spotted arriving at Auchenhowie on Monday morning.

Russell Martin ruled out, Wagner considered
Barry Ferguson has emerged as an early favourite to take charge of Rangers until the end of the season with the former captain set to hold talks with the decision-makers on Monday, according to GIVEMESPORT.
Russell Martin has been mooted as an option to replace Clement, but the news outlet reported via their website on 24 February that the Gers hierarchy have decided against making an approach for the former Southampton boss.
Wagner, though, is under consideration at Ibrox, as per GIVEMESPORT journalist Ben Jacobs on X.
Club | Years | Matches | Points Per Match |
Norwich | 2023-2024 | 75 | 1.47 |
BSC Young Boys | 2021-2022 | 40 | 1.73 |
Schalke | 2019-2020 | 40 | 1.20 |
Huddersfield | 2015-2019 | 154 | 1.23 |
The 53-year-old, who is known as a close friend to Jurgen Klopp, has been without a job since leaving Norwich City towards the end of last season.

Rangers hold off permanent manager appointment
Everything suggests that Rangers will wait until the summer to appoint a permanent replacement for Clement, with their current priority being a caretaker.
This could be because the Glasgow giants are in the midst of a takeover by a consortium including Paraag Marathe of Leeds United and 49ers Enterprises.
It would make sense for the Premiership heavyweights to wait until the takeover is finalised before handing a long-term contract to a new manager.
