Tavernier blasted on BBC Sportscene after Rangers footage v St Mirren – ‘Bad’

Rangers suffered another shocking defeat on Saturday with James Tavernier slammed for his involvement in the clash.

Rangers’ season went from bad to worse, with a 2-0 home defeat to St. Mirren piling even more pressure on Philippe Clement.

Not only was it another day of embarrassment for the Gers, it was one for the history books with it being the first time since 2018 that both Rangers and Celtic lost on the same day.

However, those of a Light Blue persuasion will care less about that, and focus more on what was yet another shambolic performance from their side in what has been a dismal campaign as a whole.

Tavernier slammed for St. Mirren opener

With Rangers failing to make their dominance count, all St. Mirren had to do was remain in the game and take their chances when they arrived which is exactly what they did.

Mikael Mandron opened the scoring after 55 minutes, latching on to a long ball forward before dispatching it past Jack Butland.

Rangers were shouting for a foul on Clinton Nsiala, but those claims fell on deaf ears, with Tavernier slammed for his involvement in the goal.

Speaking via Sportscene (22 February), Peter Grant said: “I think it’s bad play in the first place. I think James Tavernier has got to be round on the cover, he shouldn’t go for the ball.”

Given the fact that Celtic suffered defeat on the same day, it was a real opportunity for Clement’s side to close the 13-point gap but an inept performance prevented that from being the case.

Clement hanging on by a thread at Rangers

After what was another dreadful performance from his side, Clement will be under even more pressure and the question has to be asked as to why he is still at Ibrox.

Rangers have regressed massively this season and there have been no signs of improvement under his stewardship.

Any silverware is a distant memory with their shock defeat to Queen’s Park ending any hopes they had of achieving domestic success while the Europa League appears an unlikely route given the performances they have showcased this season.

A decision needs to be made on Clement soon, and based on the last few months at Ibrox, there is only one that would make sense.
