Rangers to sack Philippe Clement with interim manager lined up

Rangers are set to pull the plug on Philippe Clement after the defeat against St. Mirren on Saturday, with an interim manager lined up for the time being.

Clement suffered a crushing blow after Rangers succumbed to a 2-0 Scottish Premiership defeat against St. Mirren at Ibrox on 22 February, courtesy of goals from Mikael Mandron and Toyosi Olusanya.

The defeat saw the Light Blues fumble the chance to reduce the gap with Celtic, who suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Hibernian on Saturday, to 10 points.

It also raised questions over Clement’s future at Ibrox and it appears the Gers board have finally made the decision to sack him.

Ibrox chiefs on brink of sacking Clement

Clement is on the brink of being sacked as the Rangers manager, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via their website on Sunday (23 February) that the Ibrox chiefs are on the verge of relieving the Belgian tactician of his duties.

A caretaker manager is expected to be in place for the Glasgow giants’ Scottish Premiership trip to Kilmarnock on Wednesday, 26 February.

Crashing out of the Scottish Cup after a 1-0 loss against second-tier outfit Queen’s Park earlier this month put Clement under serious pressure, but the board decided to hold off on sacking him amid takeover talks with 49ers Enterprises.

However, the demoralising defeat against St. Mirren on Saturday appears to have been the last nail in the coffin for the 50-year-old.

Rangers seek replacement

It remains to be seen who will be in charge of Rangers when they visit Kilmarnock on Wednesday, with an interim manager said to have been lined up.

Meanwhile, the hunt for a permanent replacement for Clement will already be underway behind the scenes at Ibrox.

It is possible that the decision-makers wait until the takeover is finalised before naming a permanent replacement for Clement.
