Celtic ‘to agree major new deal’ due to Rangers-49ers takeover latest

Celtic may be forced into a new deal if the 49ers Enterprises are successful in their takeover bid of Rangers.

Rangers have endured a wretched campaign this time out, but the failures have stretched far beyond an individual season with their last league title win coming almost four years ago.

A severe lack of investment across all departments at Ibrox has seen the club starved of the necessary attention needed in order to compete at the top.

However, that could all change if the 49ers are to be successful in their acquisition of Rangers, with plenty of investment and ambition likely to follow.

While that will have an immediate impact on the Light Blues, it may also force Celtic into action with a fresh deal mooted at Parkhead.

Celtic told to agree new deal for Brendan Rodgers

If Rangers are to find themselves under new American ownership, it seems that success won’t be too far away with plenty of promise to come.

However, Celtic are unlikely to sit with their hands behind their back and allow the current gap between the two sides to be reduced without making some crucial decisions of their own.

One of those decisions mooted by Keevins is a fresh deal for Rodgers, who has been the driving force behind their recent successes.

Writing via the Daily Record (23 February), Keevins said: “We know that if Celtic win the Treble this season it will mean Rangers have won three of the last 42 domestic trophies. And that’s the same number St Johnstone have acquired over the same period.

“That’s why Rangers are in the market for the nuclear option in order to reset the dial. And the first thing Celtic would need to do if a takeover takes place would be to secure the future of manager Brendan Rodgers on an extended contract.”

The gap between the two sides has been growing rapidly over the last couple of years with Rangers looking light years away from being able to compete for silverware.

With a 13-point gap present, any success through the league is bordering on fantasy, while a shock defeat to Queen’s Park ended any hopes of a domestic cup run.

Rangers have a manager decision to make of their own

While the takeover may spring Celtic into action in terms of making a fresh offer towards Rodgers, it should also present the opportunity for change at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement has been at the forefront of the Rangers regression this season and it begs belief as to how he has been afforded this much time in the job.

There have been no signs of improvement throughout the last several months with a new low emerging almost each and every week.

If the 49ers are to be successful in their bid, they simply have to pull the trigger on the Belgian, otherwise, any success that is achievable will be severely restricted by a manager who is completely out of his depth.
