Rangers ‘biggest problem’ identified amid 49ers takeover
Andy Walker has given his verdict on what the “biggest problem” that Rangers have faced over the last couple of seasons has been.
The last couple of years have been fairly tumultuous for the Gers with the Ibrox outfit often finding themselves in the shadows of their arch-rivals Celtic.
While not all their results have been poor, the 2024/25 season has been particularly challenging as Philippe Clement’s men find themselves 13 points adrift of first-placed Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Many of the Gers’ shortcomings have been put down to different things but Walker believes he’s figured out what their main problem has been recently.
Andy Walker believes Rangers need to spend their money in the transfer market wisely
Even though the Gers had a larger wage bill than Celtic last season, they were still nowhere near the level of performance that the Bhoys were producing each week.
Players such as Sam Lammers failed to live up to expectations which is why the Gers underwent a massive overhaul in the summer and got rid of some of their deadwood.
The same happened again in January with both Rabbi Matondo and Kieran Dowell exiting Ibrox.
And, Walker believes that even though they’re not as rich as their rivals, with the recent news that has emerged about the 49ers Enterprises wanting to buy a controlling stake, their money needs to be spent more wisely.
“What does it mean to Rangers [the potential takeover], what does it mean in a financial sense?” Walker questioned on the Go Radio Football Show (20 February).
“In all honesty, I don’t think Rangers’ problem over the last number of years has been spending money, Rangers’ problem has been spending money wisely.
“They have wasted so much money in the transfer market, their problem doesn’t seem to be Celtic either given the Cup final we saw before the turn of the year.
“Rangers’ problem is winning games away from home, that’s the biggest problem, every supporter you speak to wants fresh investment, they want to challenge Celtic, they see them over the hill.
“In terms of finances, Rangers are nowhere near it.”
Rangers need a big summer transfer window
If the Gers want to make any sort of ground up on their rivals, it feels like they’re going to need a massive summer transfer window.
They’ve already managed to add Lyall Cameron to their ranks after agreeing upon a pre-contract deal with the 22-year-old and while he might not set the world alight straight away, it’s yet another solid midfield option for Clement.
Other areas in the team such as centre-back and full-back will also need strengthening and, if a deal for the permanent transfer of Vaclav Cerny can’t be agreed upon, at least one or two more wingers will have to come in.
Team | Position | Points |
Celtic | 1st | 69 |
Rangers | 2nd | 56 |
Aberdeen | 3rd | 38 |
Dundee United | 4th | 37 |
Of course, most of the summer’s business will be reliant upon whether the Gers have the funding to make enough moves to bolster their ranks which could prove to be an issue.
That is unless the news of the 49ers Enterprises looking to buy a controlling stake in the Ibrox outfit comes true.
Especially if their progress as the owners of Leeds United is anything to go off of.
