UEFA roadblock revealed as Rangers takeover undergoes new twist
Rangers are subject to takeover interest from the San Francisco 49ers and the Americans will have to pay heed to UEFA’s financial sustainability rules.
It’s understood that 49ers Enterprises are eyeing a controlling stake in the Ibrox outfit, amid the fragmented ownership at the club.
The US consortium are in advanced talks as they aim to complete the takeover.

San Francisco 49ers may face takeover spending restrictions
UEFA have rules in place which restrict clubs’ spending on wages, transfers and agent fees.
This is currently capped at 80 per cent of the revenue but it will drop to 70 per cent in the summer.
Rangers Review report on 19 February that while this would be a financial boost for the club, the new owners would face restrictions on how much they can spend in order to kick-start their project.
It would also unlock significant monetary value from the NFL side and would raise hope of a hefty squad rebuild.

Rangers are still expected to reap the benefits of the takeover
Instead of splashing huge sums on transfers and wages which are restricted to maintain financial balance, the 49ers can focus on boosting Gers’ revenue streams, thereby increasing the allowable spending limit.
This could involve leveraging their expertise in commercial partnerships, securing high-value sponsorships and expanding the club’s global brand through marketing tied to the 49ers’ NFL prestige.
Upgrading Ibrox by adding premium seating or hospitality options, could also drive matchday income.
Additionally, the 49ers’ cutting-edge, data-driven recruitment technology could optimise player recruitment, identifying undervalued talent to strengthen the squad cost-effectively.
Investing in youth academies and infrastructure would foster long-term growth, producing homegrown players to sell or integrate without hefty transfer fees.
By enhancing operational efficiency and tapping into American sports business acumen, the 49ers can help Rangers compete at a higher level like the Champions League, all while adhering to UEFA’s regulations.
This sustainable approach will prioritise revenue generation over reckless spending, ensuring Gers’ financial health and competitive progress align seamlessly.
