Rangers to ‘overhaul squad’ after radical takeover as Celtic claim made

Hugh Keevins thinks Rangers could be set to overhaul their squad if they were to be taken over, which would make Celtic sit up and take notice.

49ers Enterprises are said to be in advanced talks over a takeover at Ibrox with the new owners wanting the majority sharehold.

With reports having broken on Wednesday (19 February), it’s not yet clear what the future would look like but with Philippe Clement under pressure, change could well be on the way.

Hugh Keevins backs Rangers to battle with Celtic once more

There has been widespread frustration at Ibrox this term with Rangers performing well below their expected levels.

With 13 points separating the Gers from arch-rivals in top spot, the table has provided a real highlight of just how far the gulf between the two sides now is.

In a week where Celtic travelled to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, there has also been constant comparison between the Old Firm rivals and questions of whether that’s where the Light Blues really want to be.

Luckily for Rangers supporters, Hugh Keevin believes that a takeover could prove to be exactly what is needed to put them in a place to threaten Celtic.

Talking on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard podcast, Keevin said about the proposed deal: “That kind of thing would come under a radical solution. Rangers at the moment are going nowhere, and they look at Celtic and they see a team they can’t begin to compete with on or off the park at the moment.

“If a takeover of that magnitude were to happen, that changes the complexion. Rangers can’t get anywhere unless they get some money. They can overhaul the squad, and be a stronger proposition than they are now.”

Rangers ready for a new era

The Gers have been through a tough number of seasons both on and off the pitch with supporters having to watch their side fall from grace which is never nice.

The fact that Clement still finds himself in a job is somewhat a bit of a miracle given just how poorly his side have performed this term.

The points gap in the Scottish Premiership was large even before Christmas, meaning bar any freak changes, the title has already been decided.

Furthermore, the Light Blues lost the League Cup final and then got knocked out of the Scottish Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Queen’s Park.

For many, that was expected to be the manager’s last game but the Hierarchy at Ibrox seem stubborn about continuing to stand by him.

While it can’t be said for certain that he would be sacked, you can certainly imagine that a new ownership would not display much patience with the Belgian if things were not looking in good form.

This takeover could not just signify a change in manager though but also, a new competitive side that could push Celtic all the way until the end of the season and potentially top them which is what supporters have been crying out for for a while now.
