Jim White shares ‘Painful’ Rangers question after what happened in Germany

Jim White posed a painful question for Rangers fans as he compared them to Celtic after they crashed out of the Champions League.

Standards at Ibrox are well below the expected levels this term with the Gers sitting 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Philippe Clement’s future has question marks surrounding it as the question is pondered of how far he can take the Ibrox club.

Jim White asks if Rangers would like to be where Celtic are

Although Light Blues supporters will not be keen to compare themselves to their arch-rivals, looking at the trajectory of both clubs’ seasons must make it hard not to.

With the Scottish Premiership out of sight and crashing out of the Scottish Cup after a 1-0 loss to Scottish Championship side Queen’s Park, the Gers only have the Europa League left to play for.

Celtic on the other hand, found themselves in Germany for Champions League action against Bayern Munich on Tuesday (18 February).

Rangers fans were pleased with Munich as they scored a 94th-minute goal to send Celtic packing from the Champions League, but there is a joint sense of envy with that.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (19 February), White aimed a brutally honest question to a Rangers supporter, saying: “As painful as this is to answer, both domestically and in Europe, have Celtic got themselves to where Rangers want to get themselves?”

Rangers hierarchy need a wake up call

Although it can be easily pointed out that Celtic lost the tie against Bayern Munich, given they were competing in the Champions League and to such a high level of performance, it must leave serious questions at Ibrox.

It’s not just that Rangers are the second-best side in Scotland this term but rather, just how big the gulf between them and their rivals is, and it will only get bigger if the Bears fail to get into shape.

Given how poor the Light Blues have been for a lot of the campaign, it’s quite astounding that Clement is actually still in his job, with Patrick Stewart backing him again.

Their Europa League campaign is still going, but nobody will expect serious success from that, leaving Clement in no man’s land at Ibrox yet again.

If the hierarchy at Ibrox are serious about taking the Light Blues forward, surely a decision to sack Clement needs to be sanctioned with eyes on pushing their rivals away from the top next term.
