Rangers players ‘give up on Philippe Clement’ as Ibrox ‘friction’ emerges
Philippe Clement isn’t a popular figure at Ibrox right now, as the Rangers players may have potentially given up on him.
The Belgian manager’s future at the Glaswegian outfit is up in the air after what has been a rather underwhelming season.
Losing to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup was the final straw for many supporters, as there have been calls to get rid of the head coach.
Patrick Stewart hasn’t sacked Clement just yet, but it remains to be seen whether the manager will be able to last until the end of the season, considering the negativity around him.
Rangers players give up on Philippe Clement
Clement looks to have lost the backing of the players at the Light Blues, Keith Jackson says.
The Daily Record journalist believes fans and the Gers stars alike have given up on the former Monaco head coach after what’s happened in the current campaign.
While the boardroom seems to be backing the manager, Jackson feels that may cause friction between the hierarchy and the supporters.
Speaking on Hotline Live (17 February), the journalist said: “Rangers fans have given up on him. I think it looks as if the players have given up on him. The only people who haven’t given up are the board of directors, and that’s going to cause friction between the boardroom and the supporters.”
Philippe Clement to leave Ibrox soon
Clement will inevitably be sacked at Ibrox in the coming months, given his record since taking over last season.
The Gers have lost the chance of winning a trophy domestically after being knocked out by Queen’s Park, and it is unrealistic for them to pip Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
As a result, Clement’s only hope is the Europa League, and listing the trophy might as well save the Belgian manager his job at Ibrox.
While the Bears have made it to the knockout stages of the competition, it’s hard to envision them going all the way.
Lazio, Manchester United and Tottenham could potentially be the Glaswegian outfit’s opponents in the upcoming rounds, and it will arguably be hard for them to get past the top teams.
It feels like the only reason Clement is still the Gers manager is because of the Europa League, and getting knocked out of the competition should surely be the end of his tenure.
The lack of urgency from the board to find the Belgian head coach’s replacement is worrying, but it’s understandable considering the Light Blues’ financial situation.
