Ferguson makes Sean Dyche claim as ‘outstanding’ candidate named for Rangers job

Philippe Clement remains under pressure as Rangers manager, despite Sunday’s Scottish Premiership win at Hearts.

A couple of own goals from Jamie McCart, plus a goal from Vaclav Cerny, helped Rangers to a 3-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

The win was much needed on the back of the previous week’s Scottish Cup exit at home to Championship side Queen’s Park.

However, the manner of the victory was not exactly impressive, as highlighted by Kris Boyd live on Sky Sports after the match.

And while Clement remains in the Ibrox dugout for now, there is a growing impression that he is very much living on borrowed time.

Who are the favourites to replace Philippe Clement as next Rangers manager?

As of Monday (17 February), out-of-work Steven Gerrard is still the favourite to return to Rangers and replace Clement.

Russell Martin and Gary O’Neil, recently sacked by Southampton and Wolves respectively, are the next two names on the list.

Then comes Sean Dyche, who also recently left a Premier League job as he was sacked by Everton after a poor run of form.

All four of those names have their pros and cons, although the thought of appointing a defence-minded, route-one manager in Dyche won’t go down well with everyone.

Derek Ferguson names outstanding candidate for Rangers job

While player-turned-pundit Derek Ferguson would not be against Dyche taking charge if it means winning matches, he believes Gerrard is rightly considered the number-one choice.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “Rangers fans won’t be too bothered about being entertained. They want to see a manager who can win league titles.

Sean Dyche at Everton, is that the type of football Rangers fans want? I don’t think it really matters. I think it’s all about winning league titles, winning cups.

But for me, the outstanding candidate is Steven Gerrard. I’m sure others will emerge, and these are all interesting names, but Steven Gerrard knows the Scottish game and what it takes to win a title.

People say you should never go back, but who knows? I’m not surprised he’s the favourite and he’s the one I’d certainly be looking at.”
