Chris Sutton ‘shocked’ by Hearts v Rangers moment as ‘unbelievable’ claim made
Rangers returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, with one moment leaving Chris Sutton speechless.
Having suffered a 1-0 loss against Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup, it was imperative that Rangers bounced back against Hearts on Sunday, 16 February.
Philippe Clement’s side did exactly that, with two own-goals from Jamie McCart and a goal from Vaclav Cerny getting the job done for the visitors.
McCart particularly became a topic of discussion after the game as his unfortunate own goals saw the Light Blues walk out of Tynecastle with all three points.
Chris Sutton stunned by Jamie McCart shocker
Looking back at the result, Sutton described it as a “big win” for Clement, suggesting that it might have helped the Belgian save his job.
However, the pundit quickly turned his attention towards McCart’s own goals that helped Rangers beat Hearts.
“I was at Hearts-Rangers today and Rangers getting over the line, big win for Philippe Clement”, Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 (16 February).
“But, Jamie McCart, not just one own-goal, but two own-goals.
“I think Eilidh Barbour said that, I think, it was only the second time in a century that has [happened].”
Robbie Savage, meanwhile, came to McCart’s defence, saying: “The first one was a lucky one.”
Sutton, though, pointed out that the Scot could have had a hat-trick of own goals had it not been for an “unbelievable” save from Craig Gordon.
“Do you know what, Craig Gordon made an unbelievable save, otherwise he would have had a hat-trick of own-goals”, the ex-Celtic star said.
“That’s a bit of a shocker, I felt for him, but it’s shocking, no two ways about it, Rob.”
Craig Gordon saves Jamie McCart from more humiliation v Rangers
There might not be anything more humiliating for a player than scoring three own goals in a game and McCart will surely be thankful to Gordon for saving him from that embarrassment.
As for Rangers, they will not be bothered by the manner of the goals as long as they got the win and added another three points to their tally.
As Sutton said, it was a big win for Clement as he was under serious pressure after losing 1-0 against Championship club Queen’s Park at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup last Sunday, 9 February.

It now remains to be seen if the Gers can build on the win against Hearts when they lock horns with St. Mirren at home on Saturday, 22 February.
That is not to say Clement has avoided any chance of a sack as his position remains under threat in Govan.
It is worth noting that Rangers have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, while Celtic have taken a 13-point lead in the title race.
As winning the UEFA Europa League is also a huge ask, Clement would do well to remain at the helm at Ibrox at the start of next season.
