Chris Sutton raises Philippe Clement question live on BBC amid Rangers anger

Chris Sutton reckons one Philippe Clement question remains after Rangers beat Hearts 3-1 at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Rangers returned to winning ways on 16 February after losing 1-0 against Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup the previous Sunday (9 February), courtesy of two own goals from Jamie McCart and a goal from Vaclav Cerny.

The Light Blues’ performance left much to be deserved, but they ultimately walked out of Tynecastle with all three points.

Sutton, who spoke in favour of the Gers over a penalty controversy in the game, has now speculated about Clement’s future at Ibrox.

Chris Sutton makes Philippe Clement admission

Robbie Savage described the game between Hearts and Rangers as “entertaining” and said that the hosts could have scored as many as 10 goals.

“What an entertaining game, Hearts against Rangers”, Savage said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 (16 February).

“Hearts could have scored 10, but Rangers won the game.”

Sutton dismissed Savage’s claim, although he admitted that Hearts should have claimed all three points.

The pundit is also of the view that Clement continues to be the subject of anger from the Gers faithful after the defeat against Queen’s Park and wants to know from the supporters if they think the Belgian should stay in charge of the Glasgow giants after the win against Hearts.

“I’m not so sure they could have scored 10, but there are a lot of angry Rangers fans out there because of the loss to Queen’s Park last week”,

“Hearts played very well actually, probably on balance deserved to win the game.

“But, an important win for Philippe Clement. Do you want him to carry on Rangers fans?”

Philippe Clement under pressure at Rangers

Clement will be delighted to have returned to winning ways against Hearts as another defeat would have put his place under serious threat.

However, Sunday’s result will not have bought him much time as the performance was still unconvincing, with two own goals coming to the former Monaco boss’ aid.

Rangers have notably been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, while Celtic have taken a 13-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

That means winning the UEFA Europa League is Clement’s only hope of winning a trophy this season, but that too is herculean task.

It remains to be seen if he can prove himself in Govan between now and the end of the season.

Should results and performances not improve, Patrick Stewart will be left with no choice but to part ways with the 50-year-old.
