Chris Sutton has just absolutely nailed it with Rangers in swipe at Ibrox board
Chris Sutton has never been shy about voicing his discontent about Rangers and their troubles in recent seasons.
This season has been particularly poor and ultimately has resulted in plenty of pressure being piled on Philippe Clement in the Ibrox dugout.
This was only worsened by a Scottish Cup defeat at home to Queens Park, meaning silverware is increasingly unlikely in Govan this campaign.
Although blame will fall on the doorstep of the Gers’ head coach, questions also have been asked of the new look board in G51.
Chris Sutton blames Rangers board for failure under Philippe Clement
There is always going to be complaints made against the Belgian manager when his side sit so far off the pace in the Scottish Premiership.
A positive campaign in the Europa League has somewhat papered over those cracks but they were revealed with the humiliating cup defeat.
With that being said, Chris Sutton believes the Ibrox board has to take part of the blame for the failure in recent years, especially when compared to the success of Celtic.
Speaking live on Sky Sports Football (16 February, 11:31am), the former Hoops striker took aim at the hierarchy in Govan for their lack of ambition.
He said: “Is this just on Philippe Clement now though? The way I see it is about ambition. What I would say is, is the Rangers hierarchy’s ambition in line with the club’s support? I don’t think it is.
“How have we judged Rangers and Celtic over the years? Whether we like it or not, you always judge them on how their rivals are performing and for so long now Rangers have been languishing behind. Years ago I called them serial losers and nothing’s changed. Three trophies out of 42, that is not good enough.
“This isn’t just on Philippe Clement, this is on the club’s hierarchy and that’s what it is. It was an all-time low losing to Queens Park, Rangers fans expect better and I totally get that.”
Chris Sutton spot on with Rangers examination
Although performances under the ex-Monaco boss have been laughable at times, it is difficult to find consistency with what has been a thin squad at times.
Clement showed his desire to phase out players like James Tavernier and Nico Raskin at the start of the season but has ultimately been forced into starting them on a weekly basis.
This sums up the issues from the board which haven’t allowed the Belgian to build a squad in his own image during the summer and winter transfer windows.
With that being said, it makes it all the more bizarre that Patrick Stewart has stood up for the manager and hasn’t blamed finances at Ibrox.

If there aren’t monetary issues to blame in Govan, there are grounds to say that the manager should have been sacked but there is also reason to say he should have been backed better in the market.
Clement isn’t blameless by any sense of the imagination but it is fair to say he has been let down by the hierarchy at Ibrox since coming in.
