Rangers leave TV host annoyed after winning transfer battle for ‘absolute gem’

Rangers have left TV presenter Ewen Cameron annoyed with a bit of transfer business they’ve conducted recently.

The Gers have been on the back foot for most of the 2024/25 campaign, with Philippe Clement‘s men even getting knocked out of the Scottish Cup by second-tier side Queen’s Park.

Plenty of moves were made in the summer transfer window by Nils Koppen in a bid to try and bolster the Gers’ ranks.

However, the winter window was the polar opposite with only Rafael Fernandes and Lyall Cameron being signed – the latter not arriving until June when his Dundee contract expires.

And it’s the transfer of the latter of the two which has annoyed Cameron.

Why has Lyall Cameron’s move to Rangers annoyed Ewen Cameron?

Cameron, who co-hosts the Big Scottish Football Podcast for Clyde 1 Superscoreboard and has also hosted other shows such as The Late Show with Ewen Cameron, has been left rather bewildered by the midfielder’s transfer.

A couple of seasons ago, the young Scotsman was again available on a free transfer but Dundee managed to tie him down.

Hearts were looking to make a move for the midfielder around the time, but in the end nothing came to fruition.

Now, a year or so on from that point, the same situation has occurred again. But this time, Rangers were the first to make a move, which has left Hearts supporter Cameron rather frustrated.

“My fear is that he goes to Rangers and doesn’t get the chance,” he said on the Big Scottish Football Podcast (10 February). “That’s what happens to a lot of decent Scottish players in our league go to the big two.

“The boy was in the last year of his contract and I was going ‘Hearts go and get him, go and get him’ and he signed a new deal and I think we messed up.

“I think we missed out on an absolute gem of a player there in Lyall Cameron and Rangers have done a deal for him in the summer.”

Philippe Clement has another impressive talent in Lyall Cameron

At the start of this season, Rangers welcomed Connor Barron to their ranks on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract.

While the former Aberdeen man is slightly younger than Cameron, it’s a deal that has a lot of similarities.

It’s unlikely that he’s going to be thrown straight into the first team as a regular starter due to both Mohamed Diomande and Nico Raskin still being a part of the Ibrox outfit.

However, much like Barron, he’ll be the first in line to replace one of the aforementioned duo if and when needed and will be allowed to prove his worth.

Only time will tell if the move pays off but if it does, it’s one that could be rather fruitful for Clement and his team, especially if he picks up from where he’ll likely leave off this season.
