Rangers board members ‘wanted to sack Philippe Clement’ weeks ago

Philippe Clement could have potentially faced the sack weeks ago at Rangers

Clement is under increasing pressure at Ibrox as the domestic season has seemingly come to an abrupt end for the Light Blues already.

Fans have called for the former Monaco boss to be fired after the shocking 1-0 defeat to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox on Sunday (9 February).

Rangers hierarchy wanted to sack Philippe Clement weeks ago

Some high-ranking officials in the boardroom wanted Clement gone after the Boxing Day loss to St Mirren, according to The Scottish Sun.

The news outlet reports (10 February) that several members of the hierarchy wanted to fire the Belgian manager following the 2-1 defeat in Paisley.

It has been claimed that the Gers reluctantly kept the 50-year-old head coach because they didn’t have the money to fire him.

With the pressure on the chiefs only mounting, what Patrick Stewart does with Clement at Rangers remains to be seen in the coming days.

Philippe Clement lucky to still be in Ibrox dugout

Clement is arguably lucky to still be in the Ibrox dugout after their historic defeat against Queen’s Park, which saw them eliminated in the fifth round.

The Light Blues are always the joint favourites to lift the Scottish Cup, which was helped by a recent resurgence under the Belgian manager.

Despite the gulf in finances, Clement seemed to be competing with Celtic over the last month, but the loss has led to renewed scrutiny around him.

The Ibrox faithful have already expressed their opinions, with protests against the management taking place this season.

While the former Monaco boss had taken a few strides with regards to giving more minutes to youngsters, it undoubtedly backfired against the Scottish Championship outfit.

The Europa League is the only chance of silverware the Bears have in the current campaign.

But it’s unrealistic to believe the Glaswegian outfit can win the competition, considering their inconsistency.

Clement’s future will certainly be something to keep an eye on.
