Jamie Carragher aims dig at Rangers after ‘biggest shock’ in Scottish football
Jamie Carragher has aimed a sly dig at Rangers after they were the subject of one of the biggest shocks of all time in Scottish football.
Rangers crashed out of the Scottish Cup after suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at the hands of second-tier club Queen’s Park on home turf on Sunday, 9 February.
Sebastian Drozd’s second-half goal saw the Championship club walk out of Ibrox as winners, with James Tavernier’s missed penalty late in the game adding to the Light Blues’ humiliation.
The result is so awkward for Philippe Clement’s side that it became a topic of discussion on The Overlap show hosted by Carragher and Paul Scholes.
Jamie Carragher says Rangers are ‘so bad’
Rangers were not on the agenda until Carragher brought them up during his conversation with Quinny, a Celtic fan, ahead of the Hoops’ UEFA Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.
The Liverpool legend initially asked Quinny if he feels Celtic’s achievements in Scotland are being underplayed because the Light Blues are “so bad”.
“Does anything get taken away as achievement at Celtic because Rangers are so bad?”, Carragher said on The Overlap (11 February).
He then turned his attention towards Rangers’ embarrassing defeat against Queen’s Park, asking the Celtic fan if he thinks that is one of the biggest shocks of all time in Scottish football.
“You must have enjoyed that yesterday, though? Is that one of the biggest shocks in Scottish football of all time?”, the pundit asked.
Philippe Clement clinging on at Ibrox
Many fans and pundits believed the defeat against Queen’s Park would be the final nail in the coffin for Clement, who has been under pressure since the start of the season.
However, over 24 hours have passed since what Carragher suggested might be the biggest shock in Scottish football, and Clement is still at the helm at Ibrox.
While the Belgian tactician has had limited resources in Govan this season, a lot of Rangers’ problems have been his own doing.
Michael Stewart was particularly critical of the 50-year-old substitutions against Queen’s Park, dubbing the decision to axe Bailey Rice at half-time as “deplorable”.
The former Scotland midfielder has also given an ultimatum to Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart to sack Clement to avoid the former Monaco boss becoming “untouchable” in Glasgow.
However, Clement is expected to be in the dugout when the Gers return to Premiership action against Hearts away from home on Sunday, 16 February.
