Alan Hutton wowed by ‘brilliant’ Rangers v Queen’s Park moment as footage drops

Alan Hutton has been blown away by a “brilliant” moment in the Scottish Cup clash between Rangers and Queen’s Park on Sunday after new footage emerged.

Rangers bowed out of the Scottish Cup after losing 1-0 against Championship club Queen’s Park at Ibrox on 9 February.

A 69th-minute goal from substitute Sebastian Drozd sealed an unlikely win for the visitors, while Philippe Clement suffered another embarrassing defeat as the Light Blues manager.

The Glasgow giants’ performance in the game has been the subject of severe scrutiny as they succumbed to a defeat against a mid-table club in the second division.

Alan Hutton infuriated by Rangers approach

Hutton was infuriated by the lack of urgency displayed by Clement’s side as they locked horns with Queen’s Park, who they were expected to defeat even after making five changes to their starting line-up.

The former Rangers defender hit out at the Ibrox outfit for being passive throughout the game, while he reserved praise for Queen’s Park.

He also reviewed footage of Drozd’s goal, describing his turn to get past Jefte as “brilliant” and hailing him as a difference-maker off the bench.

“Rangers, honestly, no urgency”, Hutton said on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club (10 February).

It wasn’t until Rangers went down 1-0 that they went and got the ball, put it down and there was kind of a force in their pass, and they were moving, they running off the ball.

“But, then it’s too late. Yes, they had opportunities and the penalty, and everything, but that was down to how Queen’s Park played.

“They just frustrated Rangers, and it was so passive, just side to side at the back, no real penetration, no runners.

“I mean, that is a brilliant turn, he just shifts it there, opens up his body, great finish.

“He came on as a sub and I thought he made a real difference.”

Philippe Clement to be sacked?

Rangers missed out on the chance to win the Scottish League Cup after agonisingly losing to Celtic on penalties in the final in December.

Sunday’s shock defeat against Queen’s Park means that the Light Blues have failed in both the domestic cup competitions this season.

With Celtic boasting a 13-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, Clement can bid adieu to his hopes of winning anything in Scotland this term.

The UEFA Europa League is his only hope of winning silverware this season, but that remains a herculean task.

Therefore, it appears Rangers will end the 2024-25 season without a single trophy.

The board, thus, have a decision to make regarding Clement’s future as their manager.

Sunday’s result will have been the last nail in the coffin for the Belgian tactician in many fans’ eyes and it remains to be seen if Patrick Stewart and Co think the same behind the scenes.

It is hard to see the 50-year-old remaining in charge of the Scottish heavyweights beyond this season now.
