Philippe Clement sack inevitable as Rangers board ‘to accept defeat’
Rangers were once again embarrassed in their Scottish Cup defeat against Queen’s Park on Sunday.
The Gers were the overwhelming favourites at Ibrox with Philippe Clement’s men expected to have too much firepower for the Scottish Championship side to handle.
However, despite having just one shot throughout the clash, Callum Davidson’s men left Ibrox as 1-0 winners in a shock defeat for Clement.
Before the game, the Belgian’s future seemed somewhat safe after earning the Gers a top-eight finish in the Europa League but after this performance, fans are now calling for his head with David Edgar fronting the charge.
Philippe Clement to be sacked by Rangers
Sebastian Drozds’ goal was enough to win the game with James Tavernier behind handed a golden opportunity in the dying embers to square things up after Cyriel Dessers was brought down in the box but instead, Calum Ferrie was the saviour and stopped the spot-kick from going in.
Taking to X after the game (9 February), Edgar shared that his sacking was now inevitable.
“It’s fairly simple,” he wrote. “Clement being sacked is inevitable. It’s a question of when the board accept that.
“They can wait until the next poor result, or the one after but all waiting will do is make them look weak.
“Do it now and show some leadership. He’s done.”
Patrick Stewart and Fraser Thornton need to accept defeat
Time and time again, it feels like Clement has managed to keep one hand on his Rangers job but now, it feels like the defeat against Queen’s Park is the final nail in the coffin.
Not an awful lot has gone the Gers’ way this season but the fact they were still in the Scottish Cup is likely what kept the few people that he had on his side supporting him.
Their gap to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership is currently at 13 points which feels like far too much of a gap for them to be able to make up.
And, they may still be in the Europa League but realistically, the Ibrox outfit have a very slim chance of winning that due to the sheer quality of the teams still in the competition.
So, now feels like the correct time for the Rangers board to accept defeat and get rid of the Belgian.
If they don’t manage to do that, then it feels like Patrick Stewart and Fraser Thornton will have already let their fans down without even being in place for half a season.
Which, to be quite frank, isn’t likely the way that the duo would have wanted to start their Rangers careers.
