Patrick Stewart ‘must sack Philippe Clement now’ at Rangers

Keith Jackson believes Patrick Stewart now has no choice but to sack Philippe Clement after Rangers were defeated 1-0 in the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park.

The Gers were beyond bad in the massive Ibrox upset against the Scottish Championship side and even though Callum Davidson’s men only had one shot throughout the game, they made it count.

The 2024/25 season has been one to forget for the Ibrox outfit and now that they have little chance of adding any silverware, it feels like there’s no future left for the Belgian in Glasgow.

Rangers board to take action now at Ibrox

Some may think that Rangers fell to a defeat against Davidson’s men as they had a bunch of kids on the pitch, however, that wasn’t the case at all as the likes of Hamza Igamane and Nedim Bajrami were among those who started the tie.

The Belgian’s role at Ibrox has been under severe pressure for most of the season and, after their dreadful outing against the Spiders, it’s clear to see why.

Writing for the Daily Record (10 February), Jackson shared his thoughts on what now needs to be done with Clement at Ibrox.

“If he does survive then it will be because he’s operating under a Rangers board which is itself not fit for purpose,” he wrote.

“Patrick Stewart might have hoped to avoid pulling the trigger but the CEO must realise now that continuing to do nothing is no longer an option.”

Philippe Clement cannot be kept on as manager at Ibrox

Time and time again this season fans have called for the head of the 50-year-old.

There have been multiple times this season when it’s felt like Clement has committed sackable offences but he’s always managed to just about hang on.

He’s already admitted that he’d never resign from his role after their defeat on Sunday so the only way for Rangers to get started again is for Stewart to rid the Govan-based outfit of the Belgian themselves.

While some may not see any stand-out candidates to replace him, it feels like Rangers need a breath of fresh air in their camp, especially if they want to remain competitive in the Europa League.

It feels like Clement has taken the Ibrox outfit to his limits and unless changes are made soon, this could end up being one of their worst seasons in recent memory.

This cycle doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon though, with the Belgian set to follow the likes of Michael Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst out of the back door within days, even hours.
