Kris Boyd questions Rangers board over finances in new Philippe Clement sack claim

Rangers manager Philippe Clement is on thin ice at Ibrox after being dumped out of the Scottish Cup.

The Gers welcomed Championship outfit Queen’s Park on Sunday (9 February) and fell to a 1-0 defeat after Seb Drozd scored a shock winner after 69 minutes.

James Tavernier had the chance to equalise but spurned the opportunity from the penalty spot, ending any chances of the Light Blues picking up a domestic trophy this season.

Unsurprisingly this loss has resulted in the G51 faithful demanding for the Belgian head coach to be sacked after yet another negative result.

Kris Boyd questions finances for Rangers to sack Philippe Clement

There have to be questions asked of why the ex-Monaco boss hasn’t faced the axe already given how poor the season has been until this point.

Regardless of positive results against the likes of Nice and FCSB in the Europa League, form in the Scottish Premiership has generally been poor.

Despite this, Clement has remained in the Ibrox dugout which has seen former Gers striker Kris Boyd question if finances are having an impact on the board’s decision to stick with the manager.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (10 February), he said: “Right now the Rangers fans need to know, is Philippe Clement only there now because of finances?

“Because in terms of the progression of the team, we’ve not seen that. There’s been no improvement.

“There’s nothing for any Rangers fan to feel optimistic about with Clement as the man to take Rangers forward.”

Rangers finances could save Philippe Clement

It is no secret that the Ibrox club have struggled with finances in recent years and that has made it near impossible to compete with Celtic.

The Hoops continue to lose top players and have replaced them consistently with players who are just as good, if not better.

The Gers have failed to do that despite having less pressure to maintain a league title like Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou have in recent years.

It is safe to say that even with less pressure, Clement has regularly failed to impress and could be safe in a job for monetary reasons in Govan.

It says a lot about the state of play for the Light Blues if they aren’t able to sack an underperforming head coach because they can’t afford to.

If that is the case, there is every chance that a downward spiral is on the horizon which Patrick Stewart and Co. are going to be unable to solve unless fresh investment comes in.
