Rangers v Queen’s Park: BBC pundit astounded by ‘Madness’ he saw in first half

Ian McCall was left astounded by one moment in particular from Queen’s Park left-back Joshua Scott in their Scottish Cup game against Rangers on Sunday.

Rangers were the dominant side for most of the first half with Philippe Clement’s men getting an abundance of chances throughout the first 45 minutes.

Although the Gers were the ones on the front foot, it felt like Scottish Championship side Queen’s Park were holding their own fairly well.

There were obviously a couple of edge-of-the-seat moments for Callum Davidson’s men but when you’re up against one of the best teams in Scotland, it’s not all that much of a surprise.

Ian McCall shocked by what Joshua Scott did

Within the first 15 minutes or so of the game, it was evident that Rangers were going to try and come out all guns blazing despite the distinct gap in quality between both sides.

Queen’s Park defender, Scott, seemed to be trying to clear his lines but instead of doing that, he ended up giving the ball straight back to Clement’s men which left McCall rather unimpressed.

Speaking live on BBC Radio Scotland (9 February, 15:52pm), McCall shared his thoughts on the moment of “madness”.

“It’s another one, it’s madness, it’s all well wanting to play but sometimes you’ve just got to clear your lines particularly when you’re the underdogs,” he said.

Rangers need to improve their performance in the second half

Bailey Rice was handed yet another start and despite the importance of Hamza Igamane over the last few months, the Belgian chose to start the Morocco international over the likes of Cyriel Dessers.

Many expected Clement to line up a fairly new-look squad and in the end, only five changes were made.

While this is a fair few players, it still felt fairly surprising to not see Rangers being the dominant team throughout the clash.

This season, the Gers’ form has been fairly spotty with a lot of fans often left questioning why the Belgian was kept in his role as the Gers’ boss.

While Clement may have led his team to a top-eight finish in the Europa League, it still doesn’t feel like that’s a good enough result to outweigh all the negative things the Ibrox outfit have gone through this season.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Clement and his men but if they somehow don’t come out of their Scottish Cup clash against Queen’s Park as winners, it’s hard to see how there could be a future at Ibrox for Clement.
