Rangers moment v Queen’s Park blows BBC pundit away – ‘Top Drawer’
Ian McCall was blown away by one moment from an Ianis Hagi attempt in the first half of the Scottish Cup tie between Rangers and Queen’s Park.
It was a monumentally disappointing outing for Philippe Clement’s team as they crashed out with a 1-0 defeat against the Scottish Championship side at Ibrox.
The Gers dominated the first half and came close to breaking the deadlock within the opening fifteen minutes of the game when Hagi put in a cross for Mohamed Diomande that was saved by Calum Ferrie.
However, a goal for the opposition in the second half set the tone for the afternoon and despite a penalty in the final minute of the game being awarded, James Tavernier saw his effort dramatically saved.
Ian McCall wowed by Rangers moment
The Gers would have liked to have gone ahead at the earliest point possible as they looked to progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup at Ibrox.
Hagi gave his side a great chance to do so early in the game but the opposition goalkeeper was quick in his reactions to ensure he kept his side in the game.
Even though the chance was kept out, it was a great ball across by Hagi which showed the quality that the Light Blues have in their side at times.
Speaking live on BBC Sportsound commentary (9 February), McCall admitted he was blown away by the ball across as he said: “Brilliant save, it’s fired across by Hagi, so instinctive, I thought that was absolutely top drawer”
Rangers crash out against Queen’s Park
After not making enough of their possession and chances in the first half, it was Queen’s Park who broke the deadlock with a goal that highlighted defensive errors for the Light Blues.
Philippe Clement made a number of changes to his starting line-up to take on the Scottish Championship side as he rotated his squad and as a result, his side seemed to look disjointed and struggled to really do what they should have.
Hagi’s ball across to Diomande in the first half though showed the quality that Rangers do have throughout their team and it probably should have served more of a boost going forward.
The Gers dominated first-half proceedings and despite their best attempts, the Spiders could not see themselves get into the game.
However, it was the opposition who made it count in the second half and after a terrible defensive moment for the Light Blues, Queen’s Park took the lead.
With the Gers side sitting 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this term, cup competitions have become absolutely vital at Ibrox and Clement will be well aware of this given the speculation that has surrounded his job at times this season.
With that in mind, Clement will be disappointed with how things played out on Sunday and there will certainly be more questions asked of what is going on at Ibrox as a result.
There is still plenty of work to be done with the Glasgow outfit and being knocked out of the Scottish Cup will certainly have highlighted this to be the case for plenty of supporters.
