Ferguson wowed after ‘Sensational’ moment in Rangers v Queen’s Park

Thomas Duncan and Derek Ferguson were wowed by one moment from Queen’s Park as they dramatically defeated Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish Cup.

Philippe Clement’s side toiled for much of the second half in front of a shocked Ibrox on Sunday (9 February) and succumbed to defeat thanks to Seb Drozd’s dramatic winner.

They did have the chance to take the game to extra-time when Cyriel Dessers was awarded a last-gasp penalty but James Tavernier saw his effort dramatically saved.

Prior to all the late drama, the visitors were growing in confidence in the second half as the hosts looked rattled by their second-tier opponents.

And one action from visiting winger Ryan Duncan left BBC Sportsound commentator Duncan hugely impressed with former Rangers ace Ferguson equally complimentary.

Duncan managed to find space down the left-hand side and put in a wonderful delivery across the face of goal that Kyle Hurst almost managed to get on the end of.

However, he could not quite make it and Rangers survived the danger before the late calamity that left Clement and his side completely red-faced.

“That is a sensational cross and it just evades Hurst on the slide,” Duncan explained.

Ferguson replied: “That’s brilliant play, it’s a ball from Ruddin, beautifully weighted down this left-hand side (to Duncan).

“Hurst can only be inches away from that, full stretch, you’re thinking he’s getting there but I think it might have got just the smallest of nicks.”

Philippe Clement days numbered at Rangers

From a Rangers perspective, this was just an awful heart-in-mouth moment but it could not compare to what was to come in the closing stages.

The Gers had toiled and toiled in the first half, creating a few chances but were kept out by the brilliant visiting Queen’s Park goalkeeper Calum Ferrie.

But the Light Blues were beyond abject in the second period and there were warning signs even before the Drozd’s winner that shocked Ibrox.

Tavernier may have missed the penalty but even had he scored you have to say there would be some serious questions asked of Clement, whose days at Ibrox are now surely numbered.

The Scottish Cup represented the best realistic chance of silverware left after defeat in the Scottish League Cup final and the 13-point gap to Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

They are, of course, still in Europa League contention but if this performance is anything to go by then their European venture will not last much longer.

And it remains to be seen if Clement will even cling on to his job now given the awful nature of his performance. The smart money would be that he won’t.
