Lyall Cameron transfer: ‘Superb’ verdict delivered after Rangers agree terms

Rangers have landed a technically “superb” player in Lyall Cameron, says former Dundee manager James McPake.

The Gers completed the pre-contract agreement signing of the 22-year-old on deadline day (3 February), for a compensation fee in the region of £400,000 [Daily Record].

It is safe to say this deal has gone down well in Govan, especially after beating various sides in the Scottish Premiership to his signature this winter.

Supporters at Ibrox are looking forward to the midfielder arriving in six months but can grow excited after what his former coach and manager McPake told the Rangers Review (6 February).

He said: “It’s a great opportunity for him but I think with his temperament and his attitude he’ll not be happy just going in and doing okay. He’ll want to go in and further his career even more by playing as many games as he can with Rangers.

“He’s been brilliant for Dundee. Speaking from a Dundee perspective, I’m gutted that he will be leaving but on a human and personal note I’m delighted to see him getting a move to a huge club.

“I had him at the Under-18s when he was, I think he’d have been 14 or 15 at the time. So I coached him in that and then had him in the Under-18 team and the first team obviously.

“Technically he’s superb. He’s a really good footballer and even at that young age he was more than capable of playing for the Under-18s, playing for the reserves as well. He’s a good player and has worked really hard on his game but it was easy enough to play him for the Under-18s when he was so young just because he was so good. Since then he’s obviously kicked on and I’m delighted to see it.”

Rangers land exciting Lyall Cameron signing

The hierarchy in G51 have a lot of work to do before they’ll be able to compete with their Old Firm rivals Celtic any time soon.

There is a perfect place to start, however, and that is by bringing in the best of the Scottish Premiership and homegrown talent when they have the opportunity.

This was done in the last summer transfer window with Connor Barron who has proved to be a useful addition on a free transfer from Aberdeen.

This now looks set to be replicated with Cameron who is preparing to make the move to Govan at the end of the campaign.

With 23 league appearances so far this season for Dundee, the Scot has contributed five goals and four assists and will be keen to replicate that output at Ibrox moving forward.

Given how positive former coaches and those associated with the Dee are about the move, the Light Blues’ faithful are only going to grow in excitement.

In other Rangers news, a loanee could face an “awkward” Ibrox return this summer after what he did.
