Cyriel Dessers exit: ‘Exceptional’ claim made after Rangers transfer decision

Barry Ferguson believes that Cyriel Dessers’ performance for Rangers against Union Saint-Gilloise last month was “exceptional” and shared that he’s happy that the Nigerian is set to stay at Ibrox for now.

The striker has been long-linked with a Rangers exit since the summer transfer window with rumours also picking up pace as we entered the last few days of the winter window.

No moves ever came to fruition with the Gers opting to keep hold of their talisman for now.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (5 February), Ferguson shared his thoughts on the choice Rangers made about Dessers.

“Well certainly the past couple of weeks, he’s been in really good form, I think a couple of really good finishes, one against Manchester United and another against Manchester United and another against Dundee United,” he said.

“I was at USG the other day and I thought his overall performance was exceptional, it’s the best I’ve seen him in a Rangers jersey so I’m not surprised that Rangers wanted to keep him and I’m not surprised there were a few teams after his signature.

“I’m happy that he’s here until at least the end of the season.”

Cyriel Dessers needs to keep up his purple patch of form for Rangers

Although Dessers’ final third composure has been questionable at times, it feels like he still has a lot to offer the Ibrox outfit.

His performances as a solo striker haven’t been all that great but when he’s been partnered with Hamza Igmane over the last couple of weeks, it’s felt like the duo have worked rather well together.

Dessers can hold the ball up for the Moroccan which allows him to make his way up the pitch and try and find a gap for him to split the opposition’s defensive line.

Philippe Clement has also experimented with Igamane on the flanks this term but it’s evident that he’s much more effective in a more central role.

There’s still plenty of time left in the season for things to start going the Gers’ way and as long as Dessers can keep up his recent run of good form, it’s hard to see why they won’t improve on their performances from earlier in the season.
