Cyriel Dessers exit: Door remains open for Rangers sale after what happened

Cyriel Dessers could still leave Rangers at the end of the season after failing to find a new club before Deadline Day, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported via its Rangers Confidential online feature (6 February) that the 30-year-old was the subject of big interest, with 10 offers on the table according to his agent (voetbalnieuws), after failing behind Hamza Igamane and Danilo in the pecking order this season.

In a sensational turnaround, the Gers board promised Philippe Clement that the forward would not be sold at the midway point of the season, with few replacement options available on the market [Scottish Daily Mail].

However, the Mail said “the door clearly remains open for a summer move” having looked a “surefire bet for a departure” at Ibrox.

Cyriel Dessers can still leave Rangers

The Nigerian has played himself into form at the perfect time for Rangers, with six goals and one assist in his last six outings.

With goals against Aberdeen, Dundee United, and Manchester United and a hat-trick in the 5-0 win against Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup (19 January), his goalscoring exploits have put the forward back into the conversation to be a regular starter.

Although Dessers has often been the scapegoat throughout the worst spells at Ibrox this season, his return of 18 goals and six assists in 37 appearances is, on the face of it, pretty decent.

There may be questions about his long-term future in Glasgow, but he will undoubtedly play a vital role for the Light Blues throughout the rest of the campaign.

The 10-point gap to Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership may be, by all accounts, insurmountable, despite Chris Sutton’s objections but there is every chance of success in the Europa League.

Finance expert Dan Plumley told Ibrox News on 21 January that the Gers will receive a minimum £10million windfall for finishing in the top eight of the league phase – their finish will also guarantee passage to the round of 16 with good chances of a favourable draw.

Therefore, Clement will need all the firepower he has at his disposal to propel the Light Blues into the latter stages of the competition – this is where Dessers can shine this season, regardless of what happens in the summer.

In other Rangers news, the Gers will cast a wide net in search for talent as a “huge” scouting claim is made.
