Rangers lucky as Philippe Clement ‘rejects offers’ in favour of Ibrox stay
Rangers must consider themselves lucky to have Philippe Clement as their manager, according to Scott McDermott.
The Daily Record journalist is certain that the Belgian tactician turned down other offers to stay at Ibrox ahead of the season, although he is yet to confirm that.
McDermott is of the view that the Light Blues hierarchy let Clement down after he pleaded for more additions to his squad in the recently concluded winter transfer window.
“I genuinely believe and I’ve said this before, I think Clement could have went in the summer”, McDermott said on Daily Record’s Hotline Live (4 February).
“I think he would have had offers, he has hinted at that two or three times, and I’ve asked him about it and he’s never wanted to come out and say that he could have gone.
“But, I’m convinced he could have gone. He committed himself to this project, for want of a better word, and that’s why I think the board have stuck by him.
“Now, I think they are actually lucky to have him because you fast-forward to this window, he comes out the other day, effectively pleading for a bit of help.
“I don’t think he would have asked for fortunes, I think he’d be quite happy with the development in the squad, but he knows he needs one or two players, and they have not been able to deliver.”
Rangers board disappoint Philippe Clement?
Yes, there is an argument to be made about Rangers not making the most of the recently concluded winter transfer window.
However, there is perhaps a reason why the Gers board did not want to let Clement use their existing financial resources.
Although the Glasgow giants have significantly improved their form, there are still concerns about Clement’s side, especially their performances in away games.
It is possible that Patrick Stewart, who took charge as the CEO in December, is not convinced that the 50-year-old is the right man to take the Ibrox outfit forward.
The Light Blues board may be running the rule over the former Monaco manager between now and the end of the season before deciding whether or not to stick with him.
Therefore, Clement is forced to work with limited resources for the time being.
There has been a focus on giving more playing time to young players like Bailey Rice, Findlay Curtis and Paul Nsio in recent weeks and there could be more of that for the rest of the season as the manager navigates through various challenges at Ibrox.
