Ianis Hagi ‘future decided’ at Rangers after Deadline Day development in Italy

Rangers are now in a strong position to retain Ianis Hagi after what happened elsewhere on Deadline Day.

Fabio Marsiglia, who writes for CalcioGenoa, relayed to Ibrox News on Monday (3 February) that Genoa were running out of time to secure a last-gasp Deadline Day swoop for the Romanian international.

The update arrived after Marsiglia told Ibrox News that the Serie A outfit had shelved plans to move for Hagi in favour of signing AC Milan midfielder Hugo Cuenca.

However, with uncertainty growing around whether Genoa would launch a late attempt to test the Gers’ resolve for the 26-year-old, a major update emerged from Italy later in the day as AC Milan confirmed (3 February) that Cuenca had indeed joined Genoa.

Therefore, with his Ibrox contract expiring at the end of the season, Philippe Clement has no outside obstacles to overcome on the face of it to convince Hagi to extend his stay at Rangers.

Rangers must convince Ianis Hagi to sign new contract

Clement will undoubtedly regret his treatment of Hagi at the beginning of the campaign, after he froze the midfielder out of the first team frame following a contract stand-off.

He has since been welcomed back into the senior setup and taken his opportunity with both hands, contributing four goals and five assists this season, including a sensational strike in the 3-0 win against Celtic on 2 January.

With Genoa seemingly now out of the picture, this is the perfect chance for Rangers chiefs to ramp up contract talks with Hagi.

The Gers have already presented the player with a new contract offer [David Edgar], which clearly indicates how highly he is thought of in Glasgow, but there has been radio silence on that front.

But the saga is far from straightforward, and Rangers must act quickly to force a breakthrough in the negotiations.

While the winter transfer window has now passed, the speculation will likely rumble on throughout the remainder of the season.
