Yorbe Vertessen bombshell: Rangers make last-gasp bid to hijack transfer
Rangers have made an effort to convince Yorbe Vertessen to join them from Union Berlin, according to Pieter-Jan Calcoen.
Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reported on Monday (3 February) morning that Vertessen is set to join Red Bull Salzburg on a permanent transfer amid interest from multiple clubs.
Now, Calcoen, who writes for the Flemish daily, has revealed via his personal X account that the Light Blues have made a last-gasp effort to hijack the deal.
The journalist, though, added that Philippe Clement’s side are set to fail with their effort unless they make a “huge charm offensive”.
Yorbe Vertessen shock emerges at Rangers
Not many would have expected Rangers to make a move to sign a new striker with just hours to go before the winter transfer window slams shut.
Ibrox News reported in December that Nils Koppen is keeping tabs on potential targets in and from Belgium.
As a 12-time Belgium Under-21s international, it is understandable that Vertessen is on the Glasgow giants’ radar.
The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Union Berlin during the ongoing window after racking up just 714 minutes of Bundesliga action this season.
He appeared to be on his way to Werder Bremen at one point, but Red Bull Salzburg appear to be his new destination.

Rangers’ interest in Vertessen could be fueled by the uncertainty around Cyriel Dessers’ future at Ibrox.
The Nigeria international continues to be linked with a move away from Govan even on the final day of the transfer window (3 February), with clubs in Italy said to be interested [La Gazzetta dello Sport].
