Rangers update shared ‘as late twist emerges’ in deal for Yorbe Vertessen

Rangers will not be signing Union Berlin forward Yorbe Vertessen on Deadline Day, according to Chris Jack.

The Gers launched a last-ditch effort to convince the 24-year-old to choose Ibrox over a move to Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg [Het Nieuwsblad].

However, with the expectation that Rangers would fail in their attempt, that appears to be the case after Jack revealed the latest update via The Rangers Review (3 February).

He said: “I got a message from a contact out in Belgium this morning regarding Yorbe Vertessen at Union Berlin. There was an interest from Rangers but it looks like he’s going to Salzburg.”

Ibrox News reported on 23 December that Nils Koppen is scouting Belgium for potential transfer targets, but his efforts appear to be in vain.

With Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane increasingly likely to remain at Ibrox beyond the 11pm deadline on Monday (3 February), adding a new forward would be a pointless cause.

Despite contrary belief, scoring goals is the last of Clement’s problems at Rangers, and he must focus his efforts on strengthening the core base of his side.

However, should the Gers pursue a permanent forward signing, Daily Record reporter Keith Jackson believes a move for loanee Vaclav Cerny would be a more worthwhile endeavour (3 February).

The Light Blues boast a plethora of attacking options and are more than capable of scoring goals in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League.

Therefore, 24-year-old Vertessen, who has accumulated only 714 minutes of Bundesliga action this season, is a transfer misfire waiting to happen.

Koppen should be relieved that Salzburg are moving forward with the formalities of the signing and he should focus his limited time on a player who will actually improve the first eleven.
