Rangers to ‘use new cash windfall’ for late transfers before deadline

Rangers qualifying for the Europa League knockout rounds could allow them to bring in new additions on Deadline Day, according to Gordon Duncan.

Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland (3 February), Duncan said that with Patrick Stewart keen to bring in at least one new signing before the 11 pm deadline, their European success could hold the key.

The Light Blues finished in the top eight of the 36-team Europa League table on goal difference with a 2-1 victory over Union SG on Thursday, and the financial windfall may allow them to make more additions.

Speaking live from Parkhead, Duncan said: “I think Rangers is going to be interesting. Patrick Stewart, the new CEO, said ‘one, maybe two [to come] in’.

“They’ve already brought Rafael Fernandes but they’ve brought perhaps more money in after their success in the Europa League – so can they add another?”

Rangers running out of time to seal Deadline Day transfers

Although they have been given a financial boost by squeezing into the last round of 16 place ahead of next month’s Europa League knockout stage, it remains to be seen if the Gers will sanction late transfers.

Lille loanee Rafael Fernandes remains the Light Blues’ only new signing of the window thus far and acts as a direct replacement for Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who returned to Feyenoord following ACL surgery.

With John Souttar back in the side and in the goals against Ross County on Sunday, the Gers’ woes in central defence have been alleviated, but Philippe Clement is still keen to add a midfielder to his squad.

Lyall Cameron remains a top target for the Bears and Monday represents the last chance for Dundee to bring in a fee for their out-of-contract number 10, with the Gers likely to pursue a deal in the summer.

If Cameron isn’t courted before 11 pm, attention could turn to RB Salzburg’s Bobby Clark, and with the Austrian side open to a loan move [DaveOCKOP, 1 February], Rangers’ European windfall could be what gets any deal over the line.
