Nils Koppen ‘must go all out to sell’ Tom Lawrence after Rangers transfer update
Nils Koppen must do everything in his power at Rangers to offload Tom Lawrence on Deadline Day.
The Gers are believed to be open to the idea of losing the midfielder for free amid emerging interest from Super Lig outfit Besiktas [Aksam Spor].
However, with English sides also interested in the Welshman’s services, Gers director Koppen surely must sanction the sale as soon as possible.
This comes after an update from Joshua Barrie via The Rangers Review podcast [3 February], as he reported no new contract is likely to be offered.
He said: “Tom Lawrence is out of contract at the end of the season and, as far as I’m aware, he’s not going to be offered a new contract.”
Will Tom Lawrence leave Rangers before the deadline?
Given Lawrence’s wages, and the fact he will be a free agent in the summer anyway, it makes no sense to keep him around beyond 11pm on Monday (3 February).
Finance expert Dan Plumley has told Ibrox News that the Gers are considering the financial implications of allowing the midfielder to leave for free.
Although he began the campaign as a nailed-on starter for Philippe Clement, his long-term future in Glasgow now appears bleak.
Hamza Igamane and Danilo have stepped into the role behind the striker on occasions and performed alongside Ianis Hagi, who has enjoyed a welcome return to the first-team fold.
Furthermore, Ibrox News exclusively learned on Deadline Day (3 February) that a last-gasp move to Genoa is now off the cards for Hagi, with the Serie A outfit opting to sign AC Milan midfielder Hugo Cuenca.
With time running out at Rangers, Koppen could be left with no other option but to allow Lawrence to walk out the door to free up the overflowing wage bill.
The Belgian will undoubtedly be a very busy man in the final hours of the winter transfer window, and difficult decisions must be made with the Gers’ long-term future in mind.
Unfortunately for Lawrence, this means his time at Ibrox will soon reach an abrupt end.
