Rangers increase Cyriel Dessers price with last-gasp transfer on cards

Rangers have increased their asking price for Cyriel Dessers amid interest from Cagliari, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The newspaper reported via their print edition (1 February, page 30) that the Light Blues now want around £3.35million for the striker after he bagged six goals and two assists in his last five appearances across all competitions.

Cagliari, for their part, have been pushing to sign the 30-year-old, but the new price puts any transfer in jeopardy as it is currently out of their reach.

Cyriel Dessers dilemma arises at Rangers

Dessers has been on the chopping block at Ibrox during this winter transfer window, but his newfound form has led to a dilemma.

Having paid around £4.5m to acquire the centre-forward’s services from Cremonese in 2023 [Rangers Review], it is understandable why they are tempted to increase the asking price on the back of his current form.

However, the Gers risk pricing Cagliari out of any move for the Nigeria international by holding out for a higher fee.

There are no guarantees that Philippe Clement’s side will be in a position to demand a significant fee for Dessers in the summer, especially if he continues to play second fiddle to Hamza Igamane.

Therefore, they must decide if they want to cash in on the ageing striker now or risk selling him for a lesser fee at the end of the season.

Clement may not be against the idea of keeping him at Ibrox until the end of the season, having started him in Rangers’ last two games.
