Rangers confirm John Gilligan development in new Ibrox paperwork

Rangers have confirmed the termination of John Gilligan as a director at Ibrox, in documents from Companies House.

Paperwork was posted on 31 January to confirm that his exit had been authorised after his temporary spell as chairman in Govan.

Chris Jack later reported in the Rangers Review (1 February) that Gilligan had stepped down from his position on the Ibrox board, after stepping into the breach after John Bennett’s resignation in September.

Gilligan had fulfilled the role of interim chairman until the appointment of Fraser Thornton and Patrick Stewart as chairman and chief executive respectively, both of which were confirmed on 16 December.

John Gilligan leaves Rangers

It’s fair to say that Gilligan inherited a real mess at Ibrox in the wake of Bennett’s departure on medical grounds just a few weeks into the new season, with the Gers still playing at Hampden Park at the time.

The Bears being uprooted from their spiritual home due to delayed redevelopments on the Copland Road Stand was not Gilligan’s cross to bear, but he and the board still faced criticism from supporters aplenty.

Gilligan himself came under fire as he tried to pour water on incendiary comments from Dave King, but having overseen positive changes in his four months in charge, he leaves Ibrox with his head held high.

Having faced up to Gers fans in the latest annual general meeting on 5 December – in which their woeful transfer business was laid bare – Gilligan soon brought new faces on board to take the club forward.

Stewart and Gilligan’s direct replacement Thornton has already assumed full responsibility for the key roles at Ibrox, but they’ll certainly have Gilligan to thank for maintaining control in a turbulent few months.
