Clement needs to pull rank on Dessers transfer at Rangers as exit sanctioned

Philippe Clement and Rangers have had it rough in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Since the campaign kicked off, they’ve always found themselves in the shadow of their arch-rivals Celtic.

While their form in the Europa League has been pretty impressive, there’s always been the question of which players the Ibrox outfit should look to sell in order to bring in some new faces.

One of those players who has been consistently linked with a move away is Cyriel Dessers and, after a report from Italian outlet RaiNews (31 January) outlined that the Nigeria international is now the “favourite” option for Cagliari to replace Gianluca Lapadula, who has had a loan exit sanctioned and closing on a move to Spezia, it feels like Clement needs to pull rank.

While selling him may earn the Ibrox outfit right now, there’s hardly any time left in the window to source a replacement and if he keeps up his current run of form, he could bring the Belgian in some additional funding is he was sold on in the summer instead.

Rangers cannot allow Cyriel Dessers to exit Ibrox

While Dessers’ transfer might have made sense last summer in order for the Gers to strengthen in other areas of the pitch, with just three days left in the winter transfer window, it feels like sanctioning his exit now makes no sense.

At the moment, the Nigerian is in a decent run of form and has been playing well alongside Hamza Igamane since they were both put into Clement’s starting XI.

Rangers may need to add some new faces to their ranks in order to boost their chances in competitions such as the Europa League but selling Dessers shouldn’t be the way that they go around doing that.

The Ibrox outfit have three natural strikers within their squad at the moment and with the injury history of Danilo, it feels like Clement would be leaving himself rather light upfront if he allowed Dessers to leave.

A sale could potentially be discussed again in the summer when Clement and Nils Koppen have more time to line up replacements but at the moment, it feels like it would be a massive mistake.
