Tom English hits back at Celtic fan after what he said about Rangers ace Dessers

Tom English has hit back at a Celtic fan after they questioned why Adam Idah wasn’t praised for his performance against Aston Villa but Rangers ace Cyriel Dessers was for his outing against Union Saint-Gilloise.

While the Nigeria international didn’t manage to get his name on the scoresheet, his hold-up play and keen eye for a pass both helped the Gers leave Ibrox with all three points to their name.

English took to X to praise Dessers, writing: “Big Dessers very good again tonight. Amazing resilience. The flak that guy has had to put up with is unreal. Tough boy with burgeoning confidence. Fair play to him.”

One reply asked why Idah, who scored twice against Villa the night prior, didn’t get the same treatment.

Taking to his personal X account (30 January), BBC Scotland journalist English hit back at the fan, calling him “needy”.

“Jeez, Billy, are you really that needy? Really,” he wrote.

Cyriel Dessers deserves to earn his place at Rangers

Throughout the vast majority of the summer transfer window, Dessers was linked with an Ibrox exit despite being the Gers’ top scorer last season.

The winter transfer window has been no different either as the striker has been linked with a return to the Serie A despite Rangers only having three senior strikers among their ranks.

And, when the injury history of Danilo is taken into account, it feels like Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen would be shooting themselves in the foot by allowing the number nine to exit.

While his finishing may frustrate fans and perhaps make him seem like a much worse player than he actually is, it still feels like he should be given at least the second half of the 2024/25 season to prove his worth.

His recent performances have been fairly eye-catching and while Hamza Igamane is likely to be the main striker for the rest of the campaign, Dessers will certainly get the odd chance here and there to make his presence known.
