Thomson on verge of Rangers return in yet another new hire
Rangers are set to welcome back Kevin Thomson in an academy coaching role, according to Rangers Review.
The established Gers platform revealed on Friday morning (31 January) that the former Ibrox midfielder, who left the academy setup in 2021, will return as the academy continues to be revamped behind the scenes.
Thomson, 40, departed nearly four years ago having worked with several different age groups in Govan, to become manager of Kelty Hearts and has since taken on media duties around Scottish football.
The ex-Scotland international also represented Rangers 109 times and three-and-a-half years at Ibrox, as he is set to become the latest of numerous new academy hires made.
Rangers undergoing new academy plans
Thomson’s anticipated return coincides with a new academy project at Rangers, in which the club’s ‘B’ team left the Lowland League in 2023.
The most advanced players from the second string have now been incorporated into the first-team squad, with several earning senior game time this campaign under Philippe Clement including during Thursday’s excellent Europa League win over Union Saint-Gilloise (30 January).
Other players are loaned out, while the Light Blues remain competing in the Scottish Challenge Cup and Glasgow Cup, with focus on the Under-18 squad.

Thomson’s reintroduction to the Gers has been overseen by Nils Koppen, who claimed to desire more of the club’s “DNA” in the academy setup to bring youngsters through in a certain footballing culture.
Young players at Ibrox will be excited with Thomson’s return given what he achieved in his own career, his young age for a coach still making him relatable to the new era of the game, and for a potential fast-track towards first-team opportunities.
