Rangers backed to get more than market value for Cyriel Dessers transfer
Stephen McGinn thinks that Rangers could get above market value for Cyriel Dessers if they sold him in the winter transfer window.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away throughout the transfer window and La Gazzetta Dello Sport (29 January) reported that there could be a late race for his signature on the cards.
However, the striker has been in strong goal-scoring form of late and whether Philippe Clement would want to let his player leave is yet to be seen.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show Podcast (30 January, 51:41), McGinn admitted he isn’t sure what he would do in the manager’s position but thinks as clubs get desperate in the final days of the market they could inflate any fee received
“I’m torn with Dessers. Obviously, he was 30 in December, and there’s not going to be, I know you spoke about not going to turn a profit, but there’s not going to be money in him if he’s still a Rangers player in 18 months’ time, there’s not going to be,” the former Hibs midfielder said.
“I think the gut feeling is, is Dessers ever going to be the number nine that helps Rangers topple Celtic domestically? I don’t think so.
“The manager, I don’t think the manager’s safe enough in his position to just say right sell him and then we’ll look to the summer, we’ll reinvest the money. We’ll take our medicine until the summer and he needs everyone pulling them along together to keep the money in the bank with the Rangers fans, they’re heading in the right direction so I think it’s an absolute dilemma.
“The timing, it’s the window where everyone’s looking for a striker to score you goals, whether you’re fighting in a league across Europe, whether you’re staying in the league. You look at Rennes near the bottom of Ligue 1 in France and they’re hoping to spend £10million on Kyogo because they’re thinking he might be the guy that scores the goals to keep us in the top flight.
“So it’s a month where you can probably get more money than his market value’s worth but can Rangers afford to let that many goals go out of the building?”
Rangers should hold on to Cyriel Dessers
The emergence of Hamza Igamane at Ibrox this term has certainly left Dessers in a difficult position at Rangers as he has seen his spot in the first-team squad taken but is still contributing goals despite being a regular source of frustration with his profligacy.
It is understandable why some may be in favour of offloading the 30-year-old as he is one of the highest earners in the side so it would free up some money on the wage bill, while there are doubts he is the man to score goals to land major trophies.

In addition to this, as McGinn points out, if there are sides desperate for attacking reinforcements in the final days of the transfer window, the Light Blues could find themselves receiving above market value for the striker too.
However, given the Gers are miles behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, Clement will need all of the necessary resources to push his side as far as possible in their cup competitions instead.
When the summer transfer window comes around, there could be plenty of chatter surrounding Igamane and therefore, Rangers can’t afford to be too hasty at this stage.
