Steven Gerrard appointment: Sutton moots ‘Rangers return’ after Al-Ettifaq exit
Chris Sutton has suggested Steven Gerrard could return to Rangers after being sacked from his role at Al-Ettifaq.
Despite being contracted with the Saudi Arabian club until 2027, the decision to part ways with the former Liverpool midfielder has been announced [BBC Sport].
Gerrard leaves Al-Ettifaq 12th in the Saudi Pro League after 17 matches, just five points above the relegation zone and just two wins in their last 14 games across all competitions.
Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [30 January], Sutton said: “He might end back at Rangers one day. I think he’s still got a hunger to manage.
“I don’t know that but I suspect that, knowing him, he’ll have this ferocious appetite to succeed in management. I don’t follow the Saudi league but, clearly, for him to be in this position, that doesn’t necessarily do him any favours.”
Steven Gerrard to ever return to Rangers?
After three years at Ibrox, a return for Gerrard would not be the most unexpected of shocks for the Gers, especially with some of the decisions made by the hierarchy in recent years.
Philippe Clement still being in work in Glasgow is certainly one of them, with supporters growing frustrated with the Belgian and the decision for him to remain as manager.
While the majority of fans are keen for Clement to be sacked, the Light Blues are currently in a good vein of form, potentially changing the mindset of some of those at Ibrox.

Despite all of this, a return for Gerrard is unlikely to go down, even as a replacement for Clement and being the only manager to lift a league title since the 2010/11 season.
Since leaving Ibrox, the 44-year-old has just a 35 per cent win rate in Saudi Arabia, suggesting that any move for Gerrard should be off the cards for the Light Blues.
In other Rangers news, a report has shared if the Light Blues have made contact with their former sporting director to sign a new striker.
