Rangers condition to sanction Cyriel Dessers transfer before 3 February named
Barry Ferguson says that Rangers should only let Cyriel Dessers leave Ibrox if an appropriate replacement is lined up.
The striker has been linked with a move away throughout the winter transfer window and La Gazzetta Dello Sport (29 January) suggested that there could be a race for a late signature from the striker.
However, with the 30-year-old in good scoring form of late with six goals from his side’s last four games in all competitions, it is yet to be seen whether Philippe Clement would let the striker leave.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show Podcast (29 January, 33:41), Peter Grant urged the Gers to keep hold as he said: “Listen, the guy scores goals. We know he’s missed some chances but the bottom line is, and we’ve spoken about not allowing him to go in the window because he’s so important to Rangers.
“Barry [Ferguson] will know, Rangers have got to win the Scottish Cup and they’ve got to obviously go as far in Europe as they can because they’ve done great in Europe so they’ve got to win the Scottish Cup because they’re not winning the league, and I’m not being disrespectful, they’ll not win the league but they have to put a fight in until the end so they need all them.
“So why would you let Dessers go? And then you’ve got Danilo who’s not been 100% fit, you’ve got Igamane we don’t know [about his future].”
Ferguson backed up this point and argued one condition would have to be met to sanction an exit as he said: “The only reason you would let Dessers go is if you had an able replacement at the same level. If you can’t find that and get him in for maybe two-thirds of the money he’s on then you can’t allow Dessers to go.”
Rangers should keep hold of Cyriel Dessers
With the emergence of Hamza Igamane at Rangers this term, it is not surprising that we have seen Dessers drop down the pecking order at Ibrox. However, this doesn’t mean that a move needs to be on the cards either.
The ongoing transfer saga during the winter transfer window has been tedious for all parties no doubt but the striker has retained professionalism and shown his quality throughout the season, with a strong goal return despite a tough campaign for his side.
With the 30-year-old being one of the highest earners at Ibrox, you can understand why some may feel as though the best thing to do would be to offload the player.

However, as Grant and Ferguson point out, Clement needs to ensure he has all the necessary resources available to him to allow his side to compete for the Scottish Cup and keep pushing in the Europa League this term with the race for the Scottish Premiership likely done.
With this in mind, the Light Blues need to be careful before they sanction any exits that could leave the squad lacking even more than it has shown to be throughout the season so far.
