Nils Koppen wants Nicolo Bertola transfer at Rangers as contact made

Rangers’ hopes of signing Spezia centre-back Nicolo Bertola might be ruined by interest from Inter Milan, according to the Daily Mail.

A report in the Mail’s Rangers Confidential article (30 January) stated that Gers technical director had identified the Italy Under-21 international as a potential signing for the Ibrox giants.

Koppen was hoping to secure the 21-year-old on a free transfer given he is out of contract in the summer but defending Serie A champions Inter are now also said to have identified the 6’4′ centre-back.

Indeed, the Mail report that the Nerazzurri have already made contact with Bertola’s representatives about taking him to San Siro.

Bologna and Torino are also named as interested suitors in Bertola.

Rangers go back to the drawing board

The Gers have already bolstered their defensive ranks this January with the loan signing of Lille defender Rafael Fernandes, a move that includes an option to buy the 22-year-old.

It was a welcome addition given the injuries they have sustained in defence this season, though John Souttari is seemingly close to a return after being pictured in training recently.

However, it looks like their hopes of bringing Bertola to Ibrox are going to be a non-starter, particularly if Inter are going to enter the equation and the riches they can offer.

It is good to see the club showing ambition to target a player like this with undoubted potential to be come a full Italy international, while his resale value would be extremely high.

But it is hard to imagine a world in which Koppen’s chequebook will be able to compete with Inter if they are genuinely interested in his signature.
