Rangers ‘to hire new coach on multi-year deal’ amid Clement uncertainty

Rangers are set to confirm Issame Charai as Philippe Clement’s new first assistant manager, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

The reliable Belgian journalist revealed via his personal X account that the Belgian-Moroccan coach will put pen to paper on a three-year deal at Ibrox on Wednesday (29 January) afternoon.

He has already overseen a training session as part of Clement’s coaching staff, with only an announcement pending now.

Philippe Clement bolster backroom staff at Rangers

There were doubts about Clement’s future at Ibrox in the first half of the season, but it would now be a surprise if he did not finish the season as the Rangers manager.

Charai’s arrival only confirms that the Gers hierarchy expects the Belgian tactician to be in charge of the team at least until the end of the season.

It is worth noting that Charai began the season as Strasbourg’s assistant manager in France.

Therefore, it is possible that the Glasgow giants have paid the French club compensation to add him to Clement’s backroom staff.

It also remains to be seen what Charai’s arrival means for the existing coaches at Auchenhowie.

Clement notably added Andries Ulderink as an assistant manager in June 2024, while Stephan Van der Heyden, Alex Rae, Brian Gilmour and Colin Stewart were all part of his backroom staff at the beginning of the season.

Charai has not previously worked with the 50-year-old, but is possible that they know each other from their time in Belgium.

In other Rangers news, a “Monday sprint” is on the cards for this Ibrox player as the winter transfer window draws to a close.
