Rangers told ‘worst case’ after Mohamed Diomande red v Dundee United

Mohamed Diomande deserved a yellow card “at worst” after Rangers win against Dundee United on Sunday, Neil McCann says.

The BBC pundit believes the Ivory Coast midfielder didn’t deserve a red card after his alleged slap on Kevin Holt in the 3-1 win at Tannadice Park on 26 January.

Nick Walsh was called over by VAR to potentially reconsider his decision, but he stuck with his original call and sent the 23-year-old off.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (26 January), McCann said: “It’s not a red card. There’s not even any conclusive proof that he makes contact at all. I don’t think it’s a haymaker by any stretch of the imagination. There’s a little flick out of the hand.

“If anything, a yellow card, maybe, at worst. But certainly not a red. And they’re going to appeal it, and they should appeal it.”

Mohamed Diomande red card appeal no-brainer for Rangers

It would make sense for the Light Blues to immediately appeal Diomande’s red card as Walsh seemingly made an error.

The Scottish FA must take preemptive steps and should reverse the decision immediately.

It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold as the Glaswegian outfit returns to action in the Scottish Premiership against Ross County on 2 February.

Rangers have relied on Diomande this season, and the 2024 signing has been a key player for Philippe Clement in recent months.

The Light Blues have turned the tide after a poor start to the season, with the Ivorian star playing a pivotal role alongside Nicolas Raskin in the engine room.

Against Dundee United, the 23-year-old once again got on the scoresheet and has now made nine goal contributions for the Gers in 35 appearances in all competitions.

Clement will arguably not want to be without Diomande for some of the crunch fixtures coming up in the league and Scottish Cup.
